The Weight of Expectation.
In modern life it seems that its expectations increasingly mount. The presumption of perfection is present in every element of how we live, in our environments, careers, relationships, habits, bodies and minds. Our collective expectations heightened in in recent years through our exposure to social media that gives the allusion of a different sense of reality.
However rarely do ideals meet up to our lived experiences, our lives are progressively transient, tumultuous and evolving, where the social narratives of where we should be in our lives can hinder rather than enhance. And when we view ourselves through these lenses, our rich and textured lives can be obscured. Popular cultural narratives exclude the vast diversity of the human experiences, our backgrounds, origins, talents, and most glaringly omit the influence of chance or unpredictability.
Unmet expectations can cause an inexplicable feeling of grief and sadness within us. Our inner expectations and assumptions can colour our life’s experience, we feel it not as it as but as we assume and predict it to be.
To cast a light onto our unmet or unchallenged expectations can free us from the burden of the past, and to embrace things how they are. In the now.
